Replacing rear lights for LED units

This is a write up on how to fit new or replacement lights on an R52 Mini Cabrio (will be slightly different for a hatch book, and even a little easier). Once again poor Goofy got roped into the task of sorting out a mod for Oscar and this is the journey. OK firstly we needed to sort out the tools needed for the job in hand which were: T20 and T27 & 10mm spanner(Not a lot needed)

Now for a Cabrio we needed to prop up the boot as the cables were going to be detached, we used a fold away step ladder, we rested it up against the number plate which would in turn protest the paintwork (sure you can fine something suitable in your garage/home to suit). Then you need to disconnect the cables of the boot using a T27 on the bolt then unscrew the other using a T20 to remove panel, right hold it there, now be carefulunclip the sensor wires (for both boot open, parcel shelf placement and boot light). This is only on the passenger side not necessary for drivers side.

Pull the carpet aside to expose the 10mm nut holding the light assembly in place, this is the nut you will need to remove with the spanner, go careful you could drop it and lose it down inside: Using the 10mm spanner, it's quite a tight area, as this is a cabrio and the roof and boot location is giving you limited access.
Remove the original light unit, there are 2 clips that hold it in place so it takes a little bit of wriggling around to ease it out:Disconnect the wiring loom from the unit, and put the light to one side, it's personal preference whether you do the lights one at a time or remove both old lights first, then replace.  Goofy decided to remove both the units first

Connect the lights back up to the loom, firstly you need to connect the extension piece that comes with the lights then connect to the original loom, put back all screws, bolts and interior panels plus the boot cables. there you have it your new super duper lights.

But hold it right there!!! your not finished yet,

As the LED’s don’t have reflective lights, the legal requirement is to place some reflectors on the rear of the car.  There are some guidelines in the kit which explain the minimum and maximum distances.  We chose to put the reflectors on the lower grills.  Be careful as once you stick these babies on they don’t come off, believe me we tried as I wanted them further over but nope they were not for budging.
Finally check to see if they all work and you are done.
Whole job took around an hour and half to complete.

All done, and looking bling tastic!!!!
